2019 Its HOT in our Community
by Alyssa Hagan
The Heroes of Tomorrow had a busy summer helping out the community. During the summer, students participated in a variety of events in the local Milford and Highland area. Some of our key events included Create and Code, LEGO Robot in 4 Days, the Montessori event, Milford Memories, and the Huron River Clean Up. Throughout the summer students work with young people at the Highland Library Create and Code days to inspire them to build and code. At the LEGO Robot in 4 Days summer camp, students worked with our up-and-coming generation of STEM thinkers. The participants spent their time utilizing the design process, learning about basic mechanical systems, and then building a LEGO Mindstorms robot to complete missions. This year, programming was the focus of our Montessori enrichment day. Young students learned how think algorithmically with Cubeto, older students were challenged by Google Blockly games and used their skills to program FTC bots with Blocks code. Milford Memories provided students the opportunity to interact with our local community and share what HOT is all about! Not only does this event help to find recognition, but it helps to establish a strong base of community in our team. The last main event of our summer was the Huron River Clean Up. Students took to the wilderness with canoes and a partner to make our environment cleaner. An appreciation of the natural world around us helps to encourage students to investigate more interests; ultimately, students can apply what they learn on HOT to real-life problems.
